Journal Entry 1861 - Long

12/4/1861

I have been so busy lately and I have not written in this journal since the start of the Civil War. First President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers back in April and that is when I joined the Union. Then 4 days later 11 people died in Baltimore because when soldiers from Massachusetts marching towards Washington got ambushed by civilians. Then the south chased the union and picnicking civilians after the battle of bull run. The winning army was aloud to eat the food that was left behind. Then congress created income tax that takes 3% of incomes more than 800$ a year. Lastly we got a new army chief. George McClellan replaced Winfield Scott.
