1865 Letter - Stanton

Dear Constance, It's mid April already, and the war has ended. Our victory was bittersweet, though, for our great leader whom led us to this great victory has passed. Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed on April 15th , just a few days ago. Or has it been more than a week? I have not been able to keep time correctly. I heard he was with his wife at the moment, watching your favorite play: "Our American Cousin",.  May I hope that never happen to us. As we get ready for release, there have been rumors of the assassin was a famous actor named John Wilkes Booth .  I recall we would go watch a few of his plays before I left. What a shame. But do not fear, dearest, for he was found yesterday. The method used to get him out was cruel, I will admit, but it is fair price to what costly action he did to the country. You see,  they found Sir Booth in a barn, and in hopes to get him out, said barn was burned. The man was killed soon after by an officer there.  I know you are in mour

Dear my secret friend, I have not had too much time to write in you this year so let me recap. March 4, 1865, Lincoln made his second inaugural address. Promising no malice and held out an olive branch to the Confederate Americans.  “With Malice towards none; with charity for all... Let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the Nation’s wounds” he is hoping to restore the Union.  April 6, Retreating Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. The one-day battle was a Union victory, of course. Then around 8,000 soldiers surrendered. It was around a third of Lee's army. Then, April 15 we found out that President Lincoln was assassinated. The  nefarious deed was done the night before on the 14 while Lincoln and his wife, Mary, were at a theater watching "Our American Cousin" we are in disbelief. The foul John Wilkes Booth did the nefarious deed.  Your writer,  Thomas Ward

May 20, 1864 The wilderness battle ended about three days ago . Soldiers were shooting everywhere and the woods were on fire. I thought I was going to die. This battle was very confusing and aggressive. The woods caught on fire and that burned a lot of soldiers that were wounded and couldn't move . My side (the Union) had more people but we ended up losing . Both of us had a lot of casualties . Both of the same armies from the from the woods met at a spot near Spottsylyania and that caused even more deaths.

Dear Mother, From the first time I sent u a letter I was gonna inform you of everything during these past few days have been frustrated and tense. First we all know when we go out there we never know what's gonna happen,we were very anxious of losing at Chickamauga as this time it was a celebration that we took a huge victory had a very settle plan. Won a compress over the Bragg rebel. Then to let u know that we have control of   key of the southern city  that is something my group needs as we stand together and fight as a nation. Something that I came to do is to fight and we are on step closer on splitting the confederacy . And I almost forgot we might have found a new General to lead the Union its hard cause we need someone that would lead us in good terms but the good news is that Lincoln has found one from the day that i'm writing this Ulysses S.Grant is gonna command all armies. Still we see so many ups and downs here its really interesting to

Dear Northern Readers, George, "Little Mac" McClellan has lost to Abraham Lincoln in the 1864 presidential election.  Lincoln beats McClellan by a long shot. Via electoral votes, Lincoln gets 212 votes while McClellan gets only 21 votes from 3 states.  The three states are Delaware, Kentucky, and New Jersey.  Via popular votes, Lincoln gets 2.3 million votes while McClellan 1.8 million votes. Via military votes, interestingly enough former General McClellan gets 33,748 votes while Lincoln gets 116,887 votes. Both wanted to end the war but Lincoln made a better case.

1864 Poem - Stanton

Rehab By- Capt. Stanton Under command once again, The man with his top hat won by big numbers. President once again. The votes were astounding, Three states went with the underdog McClellan, While the rest went to the past and current President Lincoln, To unite what's supposed to be done already was their promise, Now Lincoln has his official orders to for rehabilitation. Rehab for the Union. How convenient. But the Union has been parting, Our entire purpose for war an irony. I often question if it's worth to sacrifice for a nation that is indecisive so, But Grant lifts my spirit with his military empowerment, and I have hope once again. No, I have a desire. A desire to have any meaning in this war.  To make my voice count in the battlefield. That is my wish.
