March Ninth 1862,
Today was hectic. There was a battle, a new kind of warfare. Our Monitor and the Rebels Virginia Ironclad ships. We call them Gladiators of the Sea”  and they fought for two hours off the coast of Hampton Roads, Virginia but neither could get an advantage over the others.

Thomas Ward

April Seventeenth, 1862
Today was I fought in my first battle. Victories at Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson our general Grant continued our success at Shiloh in central Tennessee. I fought bravely but truth be told I was terrified. I was lucky I heard the there were over 23,000 casualties.
Your writer,
Thomas Ward
