Journal Entry 1862- Thomas Ward


March Ninth 1862,
Today was hectic. There was a battle, a new kind of warfare. Our Monitor and the Rebels Virginia Ironclad ships. We call them “Gladiators of the Sea”  and they fought for two hours off the coast of Hampton Roads, Virginia but neither could get an advantage over the others.

April Seventeenth, 1862
Today was I fought in my first battle. Victories at Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson our general Grant continued our success at Shiloh in central Tennessee. I fought bravely but truth be told I was terrified. I was lucky I heard the there were over 23,000 casualties.

Letter Home-Parsons

    Dear Mother,     There so many things I would like to tell you.First there was so many reasons why I had to leave            home.I had to make a stand by what was right.I had to stand by a group of people that believed in          the same way I did.The past few days I had joined the union something I knew was the right thing to do there was people that had the same type of felling that I did about slavery.As of course you know I am a type of person that would do anything and everything to accomplish something.You don't even   know how many issues and conflicts theirs been about slavery.Over the Election of 1860 was one of   them of opposing sides of slavery it was one of the most impact presidential elections in American History.One of the main issues were about slavery and state rights.As I write about how history these days are I spent time thinking on what we do about it together as a union.I hope that I accomplish something but at the end I would want to change somet

1865 Letter - Stanton

Dear Constance, It's mid April already, and the war has ended. Our victory was bittersweet, though, for our great leader whom led us to this great victory has passed. Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed on April 15th , just a few days ago. Or has it been more than a week? I have not been able to keep time correctly. I heard he was with his wife at the moment, watching your favorite play: "Our American Cousin",.  May I hope that never happen to us. As we get ready for release, there have been rumors of the assassin was a famous actor named John Wilkes Booth .  I recall we would go watch a few of his plays before I left. What a shame. But do not fear, dearest, for he was found yesterday. The method used to get him out was cruel, I will admit, but it is fair price to what costly action he did to the country. You see,  they found Sir Booth in a barn, and in hopes to get him out, said barn was burned. The man was killed soon after by an officer there.  I know you are in mour
