Journal Entry 1862- Thomas Ward


March Ninth 1862,
Today was hectic. There was a battle, a new kind of warfare. Our Monitor and the Rebels Virginia Ironclad ships. We call them “Gladiators of the Sea”  and they fought for two hours off the coast of Hampton Roads, Virginia but neither could get an advantage over the others.

April Seventeenth, 1862
Today was I fought in my first battle. Victories at Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson our general Grant continued our success at Shiloh in central Tennessee. I fought bravely but truth be told I was terrified. I was lucky I heard the there were over 23,000 casualties.

Thomas Ward 1861

Dear my darling Emily, 1861 has been a treacherous time. First, on April 15, I was one of the 75,000 volunteers to enlist. I remember how you knew I had to go but you did not want me to. Then on the 19th of April, I hear about a riot in Baltimore as I am sure you did too. Eleven deaths! The first casualties of this war.  Then on July 26 the Union and the Confederates have the Battle of Bull Run, the first major battle. This is all very overwhelming and with a Confederate win, I think this war will last a lot longer than I thought.  But in November the Union got McClellan! He turned us into an elite force.   hopefully, my love, 1862 will be better and in 1862 this treacherous war will be over and I can come home to you. I miss you I hope you will write back soon. Also please check in on Mother and Father from time to time. Father wrote to me saying Mother is terrified when she gets mail, always thinking I have been killed. Letter Home-Parsons

    Dear Mother,     There so many things I would like to tell you.First there was so many reasons why I had to leave            home.I had to make a stand by what was right.I had to stand by a group of people that believed in          the same way I did.The past few days I had joined the union something I knew was the right thing to do there was people that had the same type of felling that I did about slavery.As of course you know I am a type of person that would do anything and everything to accomplish something.You don't even   know how many issues and conflicts theirs been about slavery.Over the Election of 1860 was one of   them of opposing sides of slavery it was one of the most impact presidential elections in American History.One of the main issues were about slavery and state rights.As I write about how history these days are I spent time thinking on what we do about it together...
